Time and time again.
This riff is a bit more practical on time tho. A bit more in depth on two theories that I heard just a couple of days ago and since have pondered happily.
How we speak about time is extremely powerful. Just as I spoke about the last time around, the way you perceive time can impact your actions, behaviours and even mood. At leas it does for me.
Hence, I think these two theories and thoughts might be quite useful in speaking about time with others.
→ The long time frame
We’ve all been children asking our parents how long a while lasts.
“We’ll do that in a while.” ”But when is that?”
This thought struck the same chords in me. To even think that other people have different time frames than myself wrinkles my brain. At the same time it gives me a language to speak with when talking about time frames.
I think I have a long, long time frame. When thinking in long terms, I rarely think about it as under 10 years. If we’re speaking about sustainable business or a vision for a relationship, I look at least ten yers into the future. Often further.
Hearing the idea of the time frames being different for different people made me realise that this might in fact not be the standard. Or at the very least, it might not be the default.
A long time frame in some contexts might be a year or two. In some it’s even shorter.
Realising that I default to thinking about a long time period to be at least 10 years makes sense. And I hope that’ll give me tools to speak about long time frames with other people more clearly.
→ The short time frame
I don’t have the same kind of default for short time frames, I think. That being, I can’t pinpoint if I think about a short term as being 1-3 months or 1-2 years.
Either way, this is just as important to me. One of my mantras is “Micro speed, macro patience”. In the long term, I need patience. In the short term, I need speed. Defining that short term is important, especially combined with the next theory.
→ Creating your future
It’s easy to say that “There are two kinds of people”. Most often, there isn’t. The case is the same here.
